CELANDINE, GREEN SWALLOW

"There is a Flower, the Lesser Celandine,
That shrinks, like many more, from cold and rain;
And, the first moment that the sun may shine,
Bright as the sun himself, 'tis out again!"

by "The small Celandine", William Wordsworth (1804, 1807)

The English poet William Wordsworth wrote three poetries to the Small Celandine: To the small Celandine (1802, 1807), To the same flower (1802, 1807), The small Celandine (1804, 1807).

The small Celandine, scientific name for Ranunculus ficaria, is known in Italy like Celidonia or Favagello. In the flowers language it means "coming happiness", a sign of light and happiness although it's a poisonous plant like the others Ranuncolacee. The name Celandine comes from the greek word cheliḍn, swallow, from which comes "green swallow" but it often refer to the major Celandine, papaveraceae family.
